The streets were stormed by Star Wars enthusiasts for this year’s civic parade.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the space epic being filmed in the area, the 61st Elstree and Borehamwood Carnival Parade took place this Saturday.

This year’s festival kicked off on the hottest day of the year with a procession that started at Shenley Road and continued down to Leeming Road.

Many favourite characters from the franchise could be spotted, including Darth Vader, Bobba Fett, commanders from aboard the Death Star and countless Storm Troopers.

A one-eyed white horse called Rue was ridden by Bob Bassey of Borehamwood Station Cars who was also in full Storm-Trooper attack.

Music was provided by the North London Brass Band for participants to march to.

As well as the costumes from the cult 1970’s franchise, there was a Hindu float, drawn by cows, with people wearing religious attire to celebrate the diversity in the community.

Town Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Cllr Eric Silver said: “I take my hat off to the valiant members of the Rebel Legion Elstree Base and UK Garrison in full costume who braved the hottest day of the year and entertained the crowds to support our Festival Parade.

“There were over 40 of them portraying a range of weird and wonderful characters from the original trilogy.

“As always, this was an opportunity not only to celebrate 40 years of the filming of Star Wars at Elstree Studios but for local schools and community groups to get into the carnival spirit and launch the Town’s Festival fortnight with walking and lorry floats.

“It was a magnificent day and I hope residents will get involved with and enjoy the rest of the Town Council’s busy programme of events which will culminate with Families Day in Meadow Park on July 1.”
