James Bond star Sir Roger Moore has died aged 89.

His family confirmed that he died in Switzerland after suffering from cancer.

Before his stint playing 007, he filmed TV series The Saint at Elstree Studios where he got his big break.

He played protagonist Simon Templar in the thriller series who made his way in the world by stealing from criminals.

The 118 episodes were filmed 1962 – 1969.

Chairman of Elstree Studios Morris Bright said: “Roger Moore was an integral part of the success of Elstree Studios.

“The success of that show not only catapulted him in his career but cemented the studio as a legitimate place to film for television.

“We will miss him a great deal. He was a wonderful man and he leaves behind a great legacy on screen.”

Elstree historian Paul Welsch said: “He was such a lovely gentleman and I had the pleasure of meeting him when he came to the studios in 2006.

“He attended an event to remember the series The Saint with guest stars from the show and people who worked behind the scenes, and he was honoured to come back to where his career was launched.

“It was that programme that launched him worldwide. He was a good old fashioned gentleman and I will always have fond memories of meeting him.

“He never took himself too seriously and he had an attitude that show business was all rather silly and that we are all here for the fun of it.

“He was a good laugh and was a great practical joker on set.

“He enjoyed a lovely life and he had a wonderful career, and if most of us can say that then we are ahead of the game.”

Managing Director of Elstree Studios Roger Morris said: “We are saddened to hear the news of Sir Roger Moore’s passing.

"We were looking forward to welcoming back Sir Roger to celebrate the anniversary of The Saint at Elstree Studios this year.

"We already have a plaque locally and a neon saint sign hanging high on Stage 7.”
