A proposal for 250 studio flats to be built in Whetstone is receiving polarising opinions from local residents.

The application, proposed by Meadow Residential, will see Barnet House, known colloquially as the Eveready building, be turned in 250 studio flats and one bedroom flats across nine floors.

The proposal received 31 comments in just under two weeks, with the overwhelming majority opposing the plans.

High Barnet resident Helen Howsen said: “My reservations were the impact of that amount of people in that small area, the strain on the resources and the extra cars and pollution that this development would bring into Whetstone.

“Obviously we do need new houses and not on green sites which this isn't, and this shouldn’t affect us here in Barnet but my heart goes out to all of the surrounding residents who it will affect.”

In opposing comments posted on the application, of which there are 28, the building has been called an “eyesore” and suggestions have been made for its demolition, as well as concerns raised about the traffic and overpopulation.

“It's in a perfect location for London workers being near the tube and the residents will bring much needed revenue to local cafes and bars etc at the weekends,” said Simon Neatham of Monks Avenue, Barnet, who supports the plans.

“There are few housing options for young and single people and much as we'd love them all to be in nice two bedroom flats or houses that is no longer a reality for most.”

Neighbour consultation expires on Thursday, 6 April.
