North London MPs have told the Times Series they are on lockdown after reports a police officer was stabbed at Parliament.

Mike Free, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, Matthew Offord, MP for Hendon and Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet are inside the chambers, which is currently on lockdown following a knife attack on a police officer at Parliament.

Mr Offord spoke to the Barnet Times, describing how he heard shouting both outside and through a police officer’s radio before news broke of the attack.

He said: “They have asked everyone to stay here and the Leader of the House said there had been an incident where they believe an individual with a knife has been shot by police after injuring a police officer.”

Mr Offord also made reference to another incident on Westminster Bridge involving a car, though the Leader did not suggest these were linked, while stating that his staff have secured themselves in his office.

The Prime Minister and other ministers have been taken to another location, while the shadow front benchers are inside the chamber along with other MPs.

Ms Villiers also released the following statement: “There's a major security alert in Parliament and all MPs are in lock-down in the House of Commons chamber.

"The Leader of the House has just announced that a police officer has been stabbed and the attacker was shot by police. My sympathies go to the injured officer.”

Mr Offord added: “It’s a real shame about the police officer and we are very upset that anyone has been injured.”

A spokesperson for Mr Freer said that he is inside the chamber, but cannot give any comment at this time.

It has also been reported that both the police officer and assailant are being treated by paramedics, while the incident on Westminster Bridge includes a car mowing down pedestrians.

An Air Ambulance has landed in Parliament Square and police have said they are treating the incident as terrorist.
