Flytipping is an offence that carries an unlimited fine or up to five years imprisonment.

Since 2010, the number of incidents of fly tipping has almost doubled in Hertsmere from 368 in 2010-11 to 658 in 2015-16.

Fly tipping is a crime for which a court can impose an unlimited fine and up to five years’ imprisonment.

Speaking on behalf of Hertsmere Borough Council Cath Shepherd said: “This incident of flytipping was not reported to the council and we were only made aware when contacted by police.

“Hertsmere Borough Council investigates all small to medium sized fly-tips in the borough, although we are only responsible for removing waste dumped on council owned land.

“This particular incident of flytipping took place on private land, so is the responsibility of the landowner to remove. However, we are working with the police on this matter.

“We have been running a campaign ‘Could this be yours’ to highlight the issue of using unlicensed waste and furniture removal companies.

"Many people are unaware that they could face thousands of pounds in fines as well as a criminal prosecution if their old household waste is dumped illegally on the side of the road.”
