A man has achieved his dream of climbing an almost-6,000 metre summit to raise money for the hospice which cared for his late mother.

Jane Sanders died of ovarian cancer in June 2011, spending her last few days at North London Hospice in Woodside Park.

In February, to commemorate the hospice’s work, her son George, who lives in St Albans, climbed to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in an effort to raise money to help them continue their services.

Finance worker George managed to raise more than £3,000 in donations and sponsorships.

The 43-year-old said: “The staff at the hospice were amazing and made a real difference to the quality of my mother’s final few days of life.

“I have also battled in the past with my own health issues, so for me this challenge was a really big feat on a personal level.

“Having social media as a tool was really helpful it has enabled me to reconnect from

people from my past, especially with school friends I had lost touch with.

“I just want to thank everyone who has sponsored me and supported me during this challenge.”

Donations are still being taken on George’s JustGiving page here.
