To help meet the demand for accommodation in the borough and to build a financially stronger council, two building projects are welcoming new families.

Two semi-detached two-bedroom houses have been built in Hackney Close, in Borehamwood. The homes, built on a derelict children’s playground, will be used as temporary accommodation for people in housing need.

Hertsmere Borough Cllr John Graham, in charge of finance, said: “We know the importance of working innovatively and are delighted that these homes will provide accommodation for two families that desperately need them.

“They have been built on land which has been disused for over 15 years, so this scheme not only supports local families it also improves the area for local people.”

A terrace of three, two-bedroom houses and a three-bedroom home has been built in Buckingham Road, in Borehamwood, on a council-owned disused garage site. The architecturally innovative homes are in a quiet cul-de-sac with private roof gardens.

Cllr Graham said: “Building these four homes is just one of the resourceful ways we are working towards being an enterprising council. The income generated from the private rental market will pay back our investment and create an income stream for the council in the future.

“The aim of the programme is quite simple really, we are making the most of our assets so we can fund the services residents want and need.

"Hertsmere is in an area of great housing demand and these homes will be invaluable in providing accommodation for families in housing need."
