Over 60 people evacuated from restaurant fire in El Vaquero, Whetstone

Over 60 people were evacuated in a restaurant fire which has left the roof damaged.

Fire fighters were called to the N20 building in High Road, Whetstone, around 10.30 am Sunday morning (January 8) where a fire had broken out in South American restaurant El Vaquero.

The fire broke out in the kitchen and gutted the extraction system on the ground and first floor of the three-floor building, as well as damaging the roof.

Rubbish piles high near Queens Mansions in Watford Way, Hendon, as Barnet Council reduces number of bins

A neighbourhood has been labelled the ‘slums of Hendon’ by residents after changes to refuse collection have seen rubbish piled high in the street.

Barnet Council recently reduced the number of large bins near Queens Mansions, Watford Way, from seven to four and now sends workers to collect once a week rather than daily.

Prakasha Tanna, who owns a flat in the building, was upset to see rubbish pile up on the paths as resident are forced to find alternative places to throw refuse as the bins filled up.

The owner of the “best family pub in London” has died.

George Karageorgis owned the Clissold Arms in East Finchley, which played host to the first- and last-ever gigs played by world-famous rock band the Kinks.

He died on Saturday, January 7 following a short illness, aged 57.

Barnet primary schools exceed national expectations recently applied by Department for Education

Primary schools across Barnet performed above government expectations last year, according to new figures.

The Average Scaled Score replaced levels as a new way of measuring pupil and school performance in the previous school year (2015-2016).

Barnet Council has now confirmed the Department for Education has ranked the borough’s schools well above its national expected standards.

London Fire Brigade attend house fire in Russell Road, Southgate

A man is being treated for smoke inhalation following a house fire in Southgate.

Emergency services were called to a house in Russell Road around 7.45am Thursday morning (January 12).

One man left the house before the fire brigade arrived.

He was treated for smoke inhalation by the London Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital.

Platinum Riverside Ltd promises apartment block 'in keeping' with look of former White Bear pub in the Burroughs, Hendon

Neighbours have expressed fear for their safety as the demolition of an old pub has gone forward while apparently causing nearby homes to shake.

The White Bear, an old public house in the Burroughs, Hendon, was torn down last month after over seven years of repeatedly rejected planning applications from Platinum Riverside Ltd.

Platinum recently secured permission from Barnet Council to build on the land, on the condition the demolition was only partial – a condition residents believe has been invalidated.

Tributes paid to Barnet blogger and former Councillor Daniel Hope who has died aged 44

Messages of love have been pouring in for former councillor and creator of Barnet Bugle, Daniel Hope.

Mr Hope died from a serious illness at the age of 44.  

Daniel Hope worked as councillor for Brunswick Park ward in Barnet until 2006.

Barnet Council sends out gritters to tend all priority routes in the borough after extreme weather warnings

The gritters have been out in force overnight as Barnet braces for extreme weather following last night’s snow.

Gritting crews have already spread 500 tonnes of grit and salt across Barnet’s roads since November 2016, with more than 1,400 tonnes in reserve.

With road temperatures below zero Thursday night (January 12), Barnet Council has responded to the risk of icy conditions by gritting all routes marked ‘priority one’ and ‘priority two’ across the borough.

1952 and 1956 Olympic football legend who played for Hendon FC Laurie Topp dies after long illness

A Hendon football legend who played for England in the Olympics has died.

Lawrence Robert “Laurie” Topp was born in St Pancras on November 11 1923 and his family later moved to Edgware.

Showing talent in all sports at school, he played for Hendon amateur FC from 1944 to 1961.

Barnet Council asks residents if they are willing to take a three per cent increase in council tax 2017-18 to fund adult social care

Barnet residents have one week left to tell the council if they would be willing to take a larger increase in their council tax.

The local government finance settlement announced in December permits councils to increase council tax by three per cent as a precept to fund adult social care in the tax year 2017-18.

Barnet Council currently plans to increase council tax by two per cent and has asked residents if they would be willing to see this go up to three percent in a survey open until next Thursday (January 19).
