Volunteers are needed to help run weekly running sessions in Borehamwood and potentially unearth the next Mo Farah or Paula Radcliffe.

New junior parkrun sessions are due to get underway from 9am on Sunday mornings in Meadow Park, in Borehamwood, but the organisation needs volunteer marshalls to help get it off the starting blocks. They are looking for anyone who is able to commit to volunteer every week or as a one-off for potentially up to one hour.

The runs, which are 2km and are timed, are aimed at youngsters between the ages of four and 14. Parents can join in as well.

Hertsmere Borough Councillor Brenda Batten said: “Whether you have a passion for getting more children involved in regular exercise or you just want something to get you out of the house on a Sunday morning, then volunteering at these events could be for you.

“It is a great way to help out in your community and can really bring people together, plus you could be responsible for inspiring the next generation of Olympic athletes.”

Junior parkrun is a series of 2k runs for children held in areas of open space around the UK. They are open to all, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.

If you are not a junior you can take part in the Aldenham parkrun on Saturday mornings. It is a 5km timed jog, run or walk around Aldenham Country Park which kicks off from 9am and is also free.
