The sudden death of a 50-year-old hairdresser from Borehamwood has shocked his many loyal customers.

Ken Newton, who worked at Mane Creations, in Aycliffe Road, for nearly 30 years, died in hospital last Wednesday after becoming ill two weeks earlier.

His wife Carol and daughters Natalie, 22, and Shelley, 20, have been inundated with cards from customers.

Mrs Newton, 48, said: "He was so well-known in the community. All the cards said he was kind and generous. He had a story for everything - everybody loved his stories."

His daughters described him as the life and soul of the party'. Natalie added: "He would always try to help you and if he couldn't, he knew someone who could."

Mr Newton began to feel unwell on May 30, but carried on working. After a visit to accident and emergency a few days later, he was diagnosed with pneumonia, and sent home with medication.

His health deteriorated the next day and he died after spending a week in Barnet Hospital's intensive care ward.

Peter Beal, chief photographer of the Hendon Times Group, had been Mr Newton's friend and customer for 25 years. He said: "He was Mr Borehamwood to me.

"He knew everybody and everybody knew him. There's a feeling of disbelief because he was a great community person."

Mr Newton was a keen dog-lover who attended training clubs and was hoping to take his alsatian Blazer to Crufts next year.

In tribute to his love of dogs, Mr Newton's family have asked for no flowers at his funeral, but for donations to be sent to the German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund (GSDWF), 94a Shepherds Hill, Harold Wood, Essex RM3 0NJ.

The funeral will take place at St John Fisher and St Thomas More RC Church, in Rossington Avenue, on Tuesday, at 11am. The procession will pass his hairdressing salon on the way.

I sat with Ken each week at one of his dog training classes. He was such a warm friendly person and always had us laughing. My dogs adored him because he used to give them posh cheese! His dog training skills had really improved over the last year and we were expecting him to have a successful season. Thursday nights just won't be the same without Ken. I'll miss him loads, and I'll also miss the naughty jokes he used to send me by e-mail and text. Sincere sympathies to the family. Ken will have left a huge gap in their lives.

I met Ken last year through Oxhey branch of the British Association for German Shepherd Dogs. He competed his dog, Blazer, in the Chiltern Obedience League with great success; a terrific and successful partnership. Ken was always friendly, helpful and encouraging to the less experienced handlers and in the few times I met him I learnt a lot from him. Deeply shocked to hear of his death, my thoughts are with his family and close friends at this very sad time.

I am very saddened and shocked by the death of Ken. I met Ken in 1993 when I moved to Borehamwood, he became my barber. Over the last year he also cut the hair of my son Jamie. I enjoyed my time whilst in Ken's company he always had a good story to tell, especially about his dogs. He will be missed by all who knew him.

I met Ken through Open Shows and through the British Association for German Shepherd Dogs (BAGSD), such a lovely jolly man, I last met him at the BAGSD Interbranch Competition in May, he won the Novice class and he was so trilled for himself and his lovely Blazer. He will be missed by all who knew him. My thoughts are with his wife, daughters, Blazer, and all his family and friends. What a lovely suggestion from his family for donations to go to (GSDWF) the welfare of German Shepherds which he loved and adored.

I never got the chance to meet Ken in person but he used to come into Petdogs on AOL and we would chat up a storm. I have always wanted a GSD and Ken is the one that convinced me I could handle one. I now have 2 and it is the only breed for me. I will miss him and our conversations. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and daughters.
