The top ten worst residential areas for crime in Borehamwood and Elstree have been revealed thanks to the latest figures released by Hertfordshire Constabulary.

The data shows the worst areas for crime in the two settlements from September 2015 until August 2016.

It is important to stress that, due to the nature of the logging system, incidents are ascribed to “snap points” so that the victims cannot be easily identified. This means all the crimes listed happened “on or near” the road mentioned.

Are there any surprises on this list?

10. Leeming Road

In tenth place is Leeming Road, which creeps into the top ten with 48 incidents reported on this road since September 2015.

In the last year, there were 37 crimes reported at this location, with 14 instances of violent or sexual offences, seven reports of criminal damage or arson, and three each of public order offences, burglary, and vehicle crime.

There were also 11 instances of anti-social behaviour in this period, but these are not considered crimes by police.

9. Thornbury Gardens

Thornbury Gardens was ninth in the list with 51 criminal incidents. Included in these 51 cases were ten instances of criminal damage or arson, nine public order offences, and nine cases of violent or sexual assaults.

8. Canterbury Road

Police were called to Canterbury Road 58 times in the last year, with more than half of these (33) for anti-social behaviour.

Of the 25 crimes reported, violent or sexual assaults made up nine of those incidents, criminal damage or arson six, and public order offences a further three.

7. Baldock Way

Anti-social behaviour made up a tiny fraction of all incidents in Griffiths Way, with six of the 60 reports being of this nature.

In terms of actual crime, violent or sexual assaults were recorded 20 times, criminal damage or arson ten times, and public order offences registered just five times.

6. Chatsworth Close

Of Chatsworth Close’s 63 incidents, five were attributed to anti-social behaviour. The remainder were mainly made up of violent or sexual assaults (16 cases), vehicle crime (11), and “other thefts” (eight).

5. Arundel Drive

Arundel Drive finished fifth with 76 incidents. Anti-social behaviour formed the lion’s share of offences in the area, with an astonishing 50 cases recorded.

There were nine burglaries, seven violent or sexual offences and five “other crimes”.

4. Brook Close

Of the 80 reports to police on or near Brook Close over the last year, 54 were of an anti-social behaviour nature.

Actual crimes were mainly made up of violent or sexual offences (11), criminal damage or arson (six), and public order offences (five).

3. Keystone Passage

Keystone Passage was the third worst area for crime in Borehamwood and Elstree in the last 12 months, with 84 incidents reported to police.

Shoplifting dominated here, with 22 incidents. Violent or sexual assaults came up 17 times, while “other theft” featured nine times.

2. Alconbury Close

We hit a rather sharp increase in the number of criminal reports as we go to the second worst street for crime in Borehamwood and Elstree; Alconbury Close.

In the last year alone, 110 criminal reports were recorded on or near this street, 82 of them for shoplifting, ten for “other theft”, and eight for violent or sexual assaults.

1. Glenhaven Avenue

By far the worst residential area for crime over the last 12 months is Glenhaven Avenue, with 165 reports of criminal incidents.

Violent or sexual assaults were recorded 40 times, shoplifting 25 times, and public order offences a further 22 times.

Sixty-six instances of anti-social behaviour were recorded in this area in the 12 month period.

These figures only take into account residential areas. Crimes recorded as taking place at supermarkets, petrol stations and nightclubs are not included in the list.
