A disabled woman is “living in fear of death” due to the damp conditions of her flat, which she said had been ignored by her housing provider.

Lena Marin has lived in Ash Close, Edgware, since 2013 and a burst pipe in December 2014 led to damp and condensation spreading throughout the homes which remains today.

Problems which have been regularly cleared away but continue to recur include black stains on the walls, damp seeping into furniture and mushrooms growing in the bathroom.

The 58-year-old former lawyer has been trying to get her housing association, Habinteg, to fix the problem ever since – requests which she said had not been fulfilled.

Despite court and GP recommendations saying Ms Marin’s various conditions, including osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, will be worsened unless extensive repairs are made, she said Habinteg had insisted only surface work was required.

Ms Marin said: “I cannot be expected to live in these conditions, especially with my disabilities.

“My house is filled with machines and bags collecting moisture but it doesn’t stop the constant tide, the problem is deep inside the structure and would certainly take months to complete.

“I have heard of people dying in conditions similar to mine and cannot continue living in fear of death in my own home.”

Habinteg, following a court order earlier this month, offered to move Ms Marin to another house in Ash Close while they made repairs, but Ms Marin found this house was also filled with damp and mould.

The damp was initially caused by a “plumbing issue”, according to Habinteg.

A spokesperson the association did not name said: “We are very keen to carry out the repairs to this property.

“We have been ready to start the works for some considerable time and have been working with the tenant to find and agree on suitable temporary accommodation so that the works can take place.

“We have offered our tenant a property just a few doors down on the Ash Close scheme which we hope will be suitable on a temporary basis while the works are completed.

“We aim to finish the works as quickly as possible and then our tenant can return home.”

The Times Series reached out to Ms Marin’s GP for comment and will update this story if a response is received.
