A number of neighbours have become angry after a developer has changed a planning application to convert a four-bedroom home into six bedsits.

The conversion of 16 Manor Way, in Borehamwood, was originally given planning permission to demolish the garage and extend the house in March this year but the developers hasve now submitted a retrospective planning application to Hertsmere Borough Council to convert the home into six bed-sits.

Now neighbours are becoming increasingly frustrated and angry as only those who live directly opposite the home have been consulted on the change of the planning application but other neighbours have not.

Sharon Downes, of Manor Way, said: “I am a little peeved with the development. It is like they have been very sneaky.

“They have kept the exterior but are wanting to change the inside into six bedsits.

“They have changed the use of the building and only the direct neighbours and those opposite have been consulted. No one else has been given any say.

“I have written a letter to the council saying I am not happy with the application. There should be something telling people they cannot change the application once it has been approved.

“It is very sneaky what they are doing. Most of my neighbours feel the same as me.

“There is so much building work happening in Manor Way at the moment and surely there should not be another application for separate homes. These houses were built as family homes.”

Mrs Downes also believes there will be an issue of parking on the street. Currently the home caters for roughly three spaces but she is worried having six bed-sits means there will be more cars.

The retrospective planning application does state the amended plan will demonstrate car parking and amenity space but this is still a big concern for the neighbours of Manor Way.

Brian Knoblett, 70, also of Manor Way, said: “The character of the road will be changed. I am not very happy at all. The council does not seem to be that bothered.

“Borehamwood seems to be the dumping area for Hertsmere Borough Council. There are buildings going up everywhere.

“Turning a family home into six bedsits will mean there will be an increase in cars. With the increase of cars will mean rush hour could last at least two hours.

“I have lived in my house for 40 years and they were built for families. Neighbours should have at least been contacted.”

One neighbour Mansour Radjabi is concerned the bed-sits will be given to the council and they could be rented out to anyone.

He said: “It is not safe.” The developer bought the house around eight or nine months ago and rented it out.

“One time police came to my door and asked if I know the people who live in the house.

“Something dodgy is going on. Six bedsits could mean at least 12 people will be living there but we do not know who could be moving in.

“There are already so many houses down the road and people park on grass verges and the pavement.”

Mr Radjabi also said despite not been given full planning permission he can see the work house being built from his garden.

Speaking on behalf of Hertsmere Borough Council, Keely James, said: “A planning application for the property to be converted into six bed-sits has now been received.

“The local planning authority is currently consulting on this application, which includes local residents and relevant consultees, including the Town Council and representatives from Hertfordshire County Council and Hertsmere Borough Council.

“This consultation process ends on October 21, 2016, and comments can be made up until this time.”
