Students reached out to the needy in their area by holding a brand new soup kitchen giving out hot meal for free.

Middlesex University Students Union (MDXSU)’s student volunteers came together on Saturday (October 8) to give something back to the homeless in Hendon, where the university’s campus is based.

Their first ever ‘community kitchen’ for homeless people in the Burroughs ran from 10am to 3pm and included various other community services.

Middlesex University Students’ Union Vice-President, Orla Hillary said: “We wanted the students to be involved in the community because Middlesex University is a big part of Hendon.

“It feels amazing to be involved, it is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn new ways of life and more importantly, appreciate the amazing things we have in our lives.”

In future, the kitchen will be part of a community support day which will also provide medical and legal assistance to those who need it.

Nursing students and local doctors will be on hand to provide medical aid alongside mental health nurses and psychologists.

University law students will also be present to provide legal advice and assistance in areas such as filling in benefit forms while career advice and practical assistance in finding jobs will be provided.

The next Community kitchen will take place on November 5, with plans for another before Christmas.

After January, Orla would like to arrange kitchens to take place every two weeks or potentially every week.
