The deadline is approaching for Barnet residents to have their say on controversial plans for a new school on the site of Barnet FC’s old Underhill Stadium.

Ark Academies have submitted a planning application to Barnet Council to build an all-through school set to cater for up to 1,680 pupils, which has residents worrying about the impact on traffic and parking in the immediate area.

The Barnet Labour group, which holds the Underhill ward’s three seats, has urged those concerned to submit their complaints and suggestions for council consideration before the Friday, October 21 deadline.

Cllr Paul Edwards asked the council for the number of streets included in the formal consultation to be increased and the deadline extended after hearing residents in the Linkway and Western Way had not received a letter about the planning application, but this request was refused.

Despite the formal deadline, council planning officers said it “is not a prescriptive deadline and all comments received after this date will still be recorded and will be given due consideration in the application process.”

Around 150 people attended a public meeting in early September which allowed residents to hear about the plans from Ark staff and raise their concerns around 150 people attended.

Cllr Paul Edwards said: “There was considerable anger from residents about this development at our public meeting not least because of the current grid lock at the junction of Great North Road, Underhill and Fairfield Way.

“This is the only vehicular entrance and exit for residents living in the Linkway and Western Way and yet the Conservative council has not written to them to let them know that the planning application has been lodged and they can comment on it.

“I urge residents to get their comments in to the council as soon as possible.”

Residents wishing to comment can find the planning application online here.
