A Barnet man from Temple Fortune was arrested by British Transport Police and convicted for drugs possession and fraud by using an invalid student ID to get cheap train fares.

Ryan Farber, 37, of Temple Fortune Hill, was sentenced to community orders for fraud and possession of a controlled drug at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.

He was also ordered to pay repay the ticket discounts of more than £1600 fraudulently obtained.

On April 8, Farber presented a student travel card when he was asked to produce a ticket on a Virgin Trains service from Manchester to Euston.

The ticket manager became suspicious and British Transport Police officers arrested Farber at Euston.

He was found to be in possession of an invalid student card, as well as the illegal painkiller drug Ketamine.

He pleaded guilty to sections 1 and 2 of the Fraud Act 2006 and possession of a controlled drug Class B – Ketamine.

Farber was also ordered to pay costs of £1,796.20, commit to 25 days of rehabilitation and carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

Investigating officer PC Thomas Quirke said: “Fare evasion might seem like a victimless crime but Farber deliberately defrauded train companies out of more than £1,600 – money that goes right back into running the railways.”
