Last week a group of cubs marked the centenary of the movement with a tree planting ceremony.

Cubs in Elstree District took part in the tree planting ceremony on Tuesday September 13 and the ceremony was organised by Elstree and Borehamwood Town Councillor Pat Strack, who is also the chairman of Elstree District Scouts.

Gristwood and Toms, a leading arboricultural company, supplied the tree and helped to plant it and install a plaque, designed by Bob Redman and Mike Rollins, commemorating the occasion.

District commissioner, Helen Hawthorne said: "We are very grateful to Pat and the Town Council for helping us to celebrate this special year for the cubs and for commemorating the occasion with a plaque."

After the ceremony and the photos, the cubs and leaders went to Fairway Hall to continue the celebrations with refreshments and of course a large birthday cake.

Cubs from groups in the District attended along with their leaders and other local dignitaries.

This is the second major event that the local cubs have attend this year as part of the celebrations - 80 cubs and their leaders also took part in a special camp in July with about 3,000 other cubs from Hertfordshire.

The final celebration of the year will be a promise party for the District cubs in December and the cubs are looking to find the oldest ex-cub locally as part of their celebrations.
