A supermarket is proposing to relocate causing 250 people to lose their jobs.
A proposal has been made to relocate the Sainsbury's store in the Elstree Distribution Centre, in Elstree Way, to Northampton effecting up to 250 people who may be without work.
However, Sainsbury's have said the move to Northampton will create up to 500 jobs.
Speaking on behalf of Sainsbury's Gemma Shaw said: “We have announced plans to open a new state-of-the-art frozen food depot in Northampton creating up to 500 jobs.
"As a result we are proposing to close our Elstree depot and move operations to the new, modern facility, subject to consultation.
"We appreciate this will be a difficult time for colleagues and, where possible, will look to redeploy colleagues into other areas of our business.”
Mrs Shaw also said colleagues from the depot in Elstree may move to the new site, another depot or a Sainsbury’s store.
Morris Bright, leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, said: "We are greatly saddened to lose a business such as Sainsbury's.
"Employment in the area is very high and start up business are also very high.
"Hertsmere has one of the lowest unemployment figure in the area.
"We do not want to lose this business but if it does move we will make sure any jobs are made up in businesses elsewhere."
