A school worker cycled 46 miles for a charity that supported one of her pupils.

After a student was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School support staff worker Rachel Caterer decided to raise £500 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The 48-year-old challenged herself with a water triathlon, a five-kilometre run in Aldenham Park and the Prudential RideLondon to Surrey 46-mile cycle, on July 30.

She said: “It was a fantastic challenge and one of the best experiences of my life. I got to cycle alongside iconic buildings like The Ritz and the Natural History Museum without any cars on the road - I was so in awe, that half way round I realised I had barely been pedalling.

“The boy I was cycling for is just incredible. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, he carried on with classes and completed his A-Levels. He’s amazing.

“I like to teach students that we should give back and do things for others. I like to show that we can all do something, even if it is something as silly as a 48-year-old woman trying to get in and out of wetsuit for a water triathlon.”

Mrs Caterer said she enjoys cycling around Hertfordshire, but had never cycled 46 miles before.

“I had never done anything like this. I was putting in the hours ahead of the challenge and managed to get up to 30 miles. Cycling 46 miles was tough but I wanted a challenge.

“The most difficult part was the last 6 miles when I was thinking, ‘Pall Mall used to be a lot closer than this’.

“But It was worth it in the end. And I celebrated by eating more calories than I had burned off and having a nice cup of tea in Green Park.”
