Schoolchildren from across Borehamwood have been learning about the film heritage of their town.

In Borehamwood there has been around 100 years of film and TV production in Elstree Studios, in Shenley Road, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones and The Muppets.

Having worked with schools in the past, Elstree Screen Heritage has been contacted by a number of primary schools including Monksmead and Summerswood with regards to programmes they were planning for their pupils.

The teachers stressed how important the local film heritage is to the town and many were starting topics based around the film history.

Bob Redman, chairman of Elstree Screen Heritage, said: “We helped devise separate programmes of activities for the schools including a visit to the train station and a tour of the Film and TV Heritage Trial.

“Pupils saw for themselves the stars in the pavement, the images in the booking hall and waiting room, the centenary banners and the iconic wall mural.

“They also studied the many heritage panels on their route.”

Within tight schedules the heritage group were able to visit classrooms to be quizzed by pupils with questions they had following their projects.

Danielle Boudry, of Summerswood School, said: “The children have thoroughly enjoyed the topic and with the help of Elstree Screen Heritage we have been able to really bring this topic to life and give it some real life context.”

According to Mr Redman several pupils said their fathers or grandfathers used to work at the studios making those pupils part of the ‘Film Family’.

Tom Remnant of Monksmead Primary School said: “My class have really enjoyed meeting Elstree Screen Heritage and learning about our town.”
