Nearly half a million people applied to vote in the EU referendum during the extended 48-hour period.
The deadline to register to vote was pushed back by MPs for two days, after the Government-run website crashed due to last-minute demand.
In the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday's original deadline, more than 500,000 people applied to register, causing a system overload.
It was announced 238,903 voters applied to register online on Wednesday, joined by 191,508 on Thursday. A further 5,936 applied using paper forms.
