Hertsmere Borough Council’s planning committee unanimously granted permission for Elstree Studios, Borehamwood, to build a new studio.

The proposal for the new studio next to the Big Brother house and the George Lucas set was given permission to build by the planning committee on Thursday May 26.

The application is to build a studio equivalent of seven storeys with 50 extra parking spaces which is compliant with the council’s parking policies.

Cllr Farida Turner said: “Elstree Studios is a jewel in Hertsmere’s crown and I feel we should encourage their endeavours in every way.”

Cllr Charles Kelly agreed with Cllr Turner about the studios and spoke on how they bring employment to the area.

During the meeting it was revealed there were only two comments made during the consultation period about the noise the new development will bring.

Cllr Thomas Ash said the noise is not cause by the studios and the new development should not add to existing noise.

The new studio will have translucent, grey panels which will be seen against the sky helping to minimize the impact of the appearance.

Cllr Seamus Quilty said he was disappointed Hertsmere Borough Council did not receive any communication from Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council.

All members of the planning committee voted for the application.
