A school welcomed an Olympian and former world swimming champion to open its new sports centre.

On April 27 the new Medburn Centre at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, in Elstree, was opened by Olympian Mark Foster.

The new centre has a 25 metre, eight lane swimming pool, a fitness suite and a climbing wall amongst other facilities.

Mr Foster said: “It is an honour to be at Habs to open this excellent new sports centre.

“The facilities on offer are second to none and among the best at a school in this country.”

Rooms inside are named after a former member of staff and a former pupil - Michael Palmer and Vic Matthews – who both represented Great Britain in the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Head teacher Peter Hamilton said: “A huge amount of effort and investment has gone into making this a first-class facility.

“The equipment and technology available will enable us to offer an unrivalled sports and extra-curricular programme that promotes competitive excellence and fit, healthy lifestyles for all of our boys.”

Habs pupils were treated to a swimming masterclass by Mr Foster, where advice and feedback was given on their swimming technique.

A Q&A session was also held with the athlete, where he talked about the Olympics, breaking world records and competing on Strictly Come Dancing.

Thomas Cheng, a year 10 pupil, said: “As a keen swimmer I found today a great experience. It was amazing to receive advice from such a high-profile swimmer.

“I will certainly take his feedback on-board and I’ve learnt how the smallest, most basic things can improve my swimming.”

Along with staff and pupils, the opening was attended by the Master of the Haberdashers’ Company, Mr Richard Glover, school governors and other members of the Haberdashers’ community.
