Cyclist across Hertsmere are risking their lives on the roads as they try to avoid the increasing number of potholes – according to a keen bike rider.

Ricky Faust, of Cavendish Road, Elstree, cycles on Theobald Street, in Borehamwood, towards Radlett on a weekend and says he has seen cyclists swerving in and out towards the centre of the road.

Mr Faust believes this to be because of the huge number of potholes along that stretch of road, which have been left unfixed.

He said: “It makes me feel that Hertfordshire County Council don’t care about cyclists.

“It’s always been bad but now it’s just a matter of time before there is an accident.

“Cyclists have to swerve in and out towards the centre of the road to avoid the huge number of potholes.

“It is almost impossible to cycle along there. It is very dangerous. It is getting worse and worse. It needs repairing.”

Mr Faust said the pavement at the Radlett end has been completely resurfaced but he believes hardly anybody walks along that section.

He said: “The council has the money to resurface the pavement at Radlett but something needs to be done about the road here.

“I just don’t understand why that money is wasted on the pavement but nothing is done on the road.

“I would like to think the council is cycle-friendly but it does make me wonder if they have ever tried to cycle on this road.”

Mr Faust has contacted the council but is yet to hear anything back from them.

He said if nothing comes from it he will contact MP for Hertsmere Oliver Dowden.

The government has revealed the spend on cycling was more than doubled between 2010 and 2015 from £2 per person to £6 per person.

According to the government by 2040 walking and cycling should be a normal part of everyday life and the natural choice for shorter journeys such as going to school or work.

The Minister of State MP Robert Goodwill, who is responsible for cycling and walking, said: “This ambition will require patience, persistence and courage.

“It must involve us all, engage us all, and we must recognise that we all share a responsibility to make it happen.”

With more and more cyclists on the roads Mr Faust is concerned about the safety of the cyclists who use Theobald Street on a daily basis.

The county council Hertfordshire County Council, who deals with highways, has been given £1 million from the government to help them improve road surfaces.

The money comes in addition to the £16.3 million highways maintenance grant from government to the county.

The opposing Liberal Democrats say that money is nowhere near enough and say they need more than 230 times that to cover the cost of maintaining roads.

According to roadworks.org, there will be roadworks on Theobald Street towards Radlett from June 13 to 20.

When the Times Series contacted the council, they said there will be roadworks completed on Theobald Street towards Radlett from June 13 to 20.
