A concert band will perform their final show at The Ark before it is demolished and rebuilt.

The BBC Elstree Concert Band has performed in Borehamwood since 1987 and will be playing at The Ark on Saturday February 13.

Ticket sales have so far been disappointingly low – a cause for concern for fans of the concert band.

Paul Welsh said: “I attended their first concert at the BBC Elstree Centre 30 years ago and immediately booked them to appear in the festival and other events including visits to our two twin towns in Germany and France. For many years I introduced them at each concert.

“They are great and I know they would sell out elsewhere so it is a tragedy we struggle for audiences in our town of about 35,000 residents.

“I love the idea of a concert of television theme tunes. It is their last concert at the Ark before it closes in May.

“I think our fellow residents need to decide if they want live entertainment in our town.”

The concert band was founded by flautist Ian Marshall and gave its first public concert at the BBC’s Elstree Studios in July 1987.

The continued development of the band into what it is today is due to the leadership of two people: the founding musical director Mike Crisp and the current one Andrew Morley.

Over the past 20 years the band’s performances have been broadcasted nationally as well as internationally through the BBC World Service.

They have also provided the music for a major BBC 1 documentary.

Bob Redman of Elstree Screen Heritage has organised several concerts with the band and he has been in contact with the Town Council to help promote the upcoming show.
