An 88-year-old woman has been taking part in a burlesque dance class as part of a national campaign.

Rose Spencer, 88, from Borehamwood, joined Golden B Burlesque after she got a leaflet when she was travelling on a community bus.

The new club is part of the national campaign This Girl Can which celebrates the active women up and down the country who are working to keep themselves fit.

Mrs Spencer said: “I enjoy it so much. It is doing exercise and movement which gets the brain working. The girls are great as well.

“It’s dancing but not the type of burlesque dancing you see on the TV. It is dancing to music.

“It’s great because it is something I don’t normally do. I like ballroom dancing but there isn’t anything around here for that.

“I keep telling people to join and they don’t bother to go. They just need to get up off their backside.

“I would be very upset if the club had to close. I would have to find somewhere else to go.”

The dance group has been running for more than a year and they are now in need of some new members to keep the club going.

Kerry Bowler, who runs B Burlesque, said: “The class is full of fun and smiles and it’s a great way for the ladies to keep active.

“Rose loves to take part and her confidence has increased so much.

“I have been teaching burlesque for a while now for the younger generation. People then asked me if I could adapt the class for the older generation.

“The class has been running for nearly a year now as part of the campaign.

“We want to make more ladies aware about the class and show them that burlesque is not what they think.”

The dance club used to have around seven members but because of certain reasons, the club has dropped to four members.

Golden B Burlesque 50+ meets every Wednesday at Farriers Hall, Borehamwood, from 3.15pm to 4.15pm.
