A residents group says it is concerned about the future of Aldenham Reservoir after a new company bought the lake.

Elstree and Borehamwood Residents Association (EBRA) says Liberty Lake Leisure Ltd has bought the lake from previous owner Safari Investments after an earlier scheme to repair it in return for permission to build homes nearby was rejected.

Property developer Liberty Aldenham last year withdrew an application to build 150 new homes on The homes, a third of which would have been affordable housing, were planned for Green Belt land in Watford Road, opposite the reservoir, which was then owned by Safari Investments.

Liberty Aldenham had offered to repair the reservoir in exchange for planning permission, but withdrew its plans when they were recommended for refusal by Hertsmere Borough Council planning officers.

EBRA, which campaigned against the development, says the new company has not revealed any information about its plans for the reservoir.

EBRA committee member Clare Newton said: “We need to hear from Liberty Lake Leisure Ltd as to what their intentions and their plans for the reservoir. “We have got questions that we would like to ask them, including What are their long term and short term plans?”

According to EBRA, Liberty Lake Leisure Ltd wants to fence off the boundary around the property they own and close off entry points that aren’t necessary.

This has cause EBRA members to become concerned about the effect the fence will have on the land as the members have no details on the fence.

Liberty Lake Leisure had not responded to a request from the Borehamwood Times at the time of going to press.

The reservoir was owned by Safari Investments and was leased to Hertfordshire County Council until December 25, 2015. The council announced in 2011 that it would not be renewing the lease.
