The Christmas lights of Borehamwood will be switched on next weekend to start the festive season.

EastEnders actress Shona McGarty, 24, who was born and went to school in Borehamwood, will start the countdown to Christmas at the switching-on ceremony on Sunday, November 29.

Families will be able to enjoy festive fun with free entertainment organised by Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, including an ice-rink, stalls and a performance from Borehamwood Brass.

Taylor Wimpey North Thames, which is currently building new homes at its Gemini Park development in Borehamwood, has donated £500 to the Christmas lights display.

Spokesman Christine Scarborough said: “We are delighted to help with Borehamwood’s Christmas lights again this year. They always look spectacular.

“As a local builder working in the community, we are keen to support a fantastic community event like this one.”

Tracey Malton, deputy clerk of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, said: “The lights go all along the High Street, there’s a band outside All Saints Church, concerts inside the church, a synthetic ice-rink and of course, Santa’s Grotto.

“We’re very pleased to get sponsorship help again this year from Taylor Wimpey. The whole event costs us around £24,000 to put on, so all sponsorship help is very welcome."
