A group of young mathematicians took part in the first rounds of the National Young Maths Competition.

The competition was held at the Maths and English Institution in Borehamwood and is run in conjunction with the University of Cambridge.

For the students involved, they had to complete a variety of problematic challenges and winners will go on to compete at Cambridge University.

Mariam Khan, assistant director at the institution, said: “Various schools across Hertfordshire are invited to take part in the competition.

“This year we had Year 6 students from Summerswood Primary School, in Borehamwood, Fair Field Junior School in Radlett and Highwood Primary School in Bushey.

“It is more problematic challenges rather than mathematics and the children will be assessed on their problem-solving and group-work skills.”

For the sixth year running, the competition welcomed two boys and two girls from the various schools to compete in the national competition.

The competition consists of three rounds and the first round is the regional knockout and then the top teams who make it through will compete against each other to hope to win a place in the final on December 8.
