Two Olympians were invited to teach a masterclass for aspiring swimmers.

Grant Turner and Jo Jackson visited the Venue in Borehamwood on October 29 were they taught swimmers the techniques at Olympic level.

Following the success of the event last year, Hertsmere Flyers welcomed the two Olympians to join in the one off training session.

Club secretary Laurence Vogel said: “We invited six clubs to join in this event including Hertsmere Flyers, Bushey, Watford, Hatfield, Hoddesdon and Welwyn Garden City.

“There were about 90 children taking part which is more than last year because we have opened it up to more clubs.

“Jo and Grant have just got married and got back from their honeymoon and this is the first thing they have done since being back.”

After the first of two training sessions, Mr Turner and Miss Jackson held a Q&A where the pupils were able to ask some questions and get some advice from the medal winners.

Mr Turner, who was part of the 2012 Olympic swim team and a silver medal winner, said: “I always wanted to be an Olympian. The first time I competed I was really nervous but I learn that it is OK to be nervous. Everyone gets nervous before a race.

“I started training at Swindon Tiger Sharks and I would train around 28 hours a week.”

Miss Jackson has competed for more than 10 years and has won medals in every major international competition included World Championships, European and Commonwealth Games.

“I want to thank everyone for attending the masterclasses and explained how she would train for 35 to 40 hours a week,” she said.

“I thought I would never get to go to the Olympics but because I was dedicated to doing it, I managed to get there.

“It’s not about how talented you are but about your dedication.”

After the Q&A, the Olympians let the visitors see their Olympic medals and signed shirts and took photographs.

Swimmers who took part were given a t-shirt and 10 per cent off voucher for simplyswim.com.
