Following a recent incident where a nursery left a three-year-old boy at London Zoo has caused Ofsted to undertake an investigation.

The latest Ofsted inspection graded KidStuff Day Nursery in Borehamwood as inadequate and they are now taking ‘enforcement action’.

KidStuff Day Nursery staff did not manage to control the children’s behaviour effectively and they struggled to engage their interests, according to the report.

Malcolm Epstein, the owner of KidStuff Day Nursery, said: “We’ve studied Ofsted’s report carefully and are disappointed with the findings as we do not believe it reflects the standards that we maintain at KidStuff Day Nursery.

“For that reason we are contesting the report.

“In the meantime, we would like the reassure parents that the safeguarding and welfare of children in our care are of paramount importance to everyone at the nursery.

“We are long established, have always enjoyed a great reputation and will do absolutely everything we can to ensure that the trust we have built over many years is restored.

“Our number one goal is to support and care for the children.”

In January 2014, the rating jumped from ‘requires improvement’ to ‘good’ but now Ofsted have rated it as ‘inadequate’.

According to the report, staff deployment does not meet children’s needs, or ensure their safety in the outdoor area and preschool rooms.

Managers do not check staff practice to ensure that they fully understand their roles and responsibilities including in child protection matters.

The report also discusses the security of the premises as it is not maintained and people are leaving the door open for visitors before staff can check who they are.

Ofsted will now take ‘enforcement action’ on the school which means that they will issue a Welfare Requirements Notice which requires the provider to follow a set of rules to meet the requirements.

The nursery must ensure that all areas that come under the ‘enforcement action’ are taking place at the nursery including making sure that staff take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised persons entering the building.
