Around 100 “unsung heroes” will be recognised for their time and dedication to volunteering in the borough.

On November, volunteers from all over Harrow who have been nominated for a Harrow’s Heroes award will attend a grand ceremony at Harrow Leisure Centre, in Christchurch Avenue, to be honoured for their commitment to their communities.

Harrow’s Heroes is an annual awards ceremony organised by Harrow Council, and aims to highlight the importance of people who give up their time for free to help others in the borough.

Earlier in the year, households were invited to nominate individuals or groups of people who have inspired them with the volunteering story or those who they feel have made an impact on life in the community.

This can be anything from providing counselling services for LGBT teens like nominee Aaingel Nathan or helping to feed thousands of people who are struggling for money like the Harrow Foodbank.

Sponsored by the Harrow Times, both individuals and groups that have been nominated have been featured in the paper for the past few months.

Editor Tim Jones said: ““The Harrow Times is delighted to sponsor Harrow’s Heroes this year and have the chance to recognise some of the outstanding achievements and endeavours of people living in the borough.”

But along with the nominees, it is also important to highlight the sponsors who provide the funding to allow the yearly event to take place.

Sponsors of the competition this year include Tesco, builders Terry and Stephens, IT company Sopra Steria and recruitment agency Pertemps.

Suzy Dale from Pertemps said: "It gives Pertemps enormous pleasure to be associated with the 2015 Harrow’s Heroes event following the success of last year’s partnership.

“Through schemes such as Harrow’s Heroes, these stories can be shared with a wider audience and unsung heroes can gain the recognition that is so thoroughly deserved."

Alongside them are solicitors Harold Benjamin, plus Harrow School, construction company Durkan and Harrow College.

Cyril Dennemont of Harold Benjamin Solicitors said: “Harold Benjamin is once again very proud to be a sponsor of this year’s Harrow Heroes event, because we fully appreciate the dedication of many of our community heroes, who give so much time and effort for free to help others improve their wellbeing.”

Headmaster Jim Hawkins, of Harrow School, said: “Harrow School thanks the 2015 Harrow Heroes for their contribution to our community.

“Knowing that leadership and service go hand in hand, we aim at Harrow to ensure that our boys appreciate generosity and seek to be of good influence beyond the School.

“Harrow Heroes demonstrates that ethos and we are delighted to support it.”

The Rotary Club of Edgware and Stanmore has also continued its sponsorship for the event, highlighting the need for volunteers in the borough and the importance of recognition.

Member Margaret Matchett said: “Rotary is an organisation made up of volunteers who are working to benefit our local and international communities.

“Therefore as sponsors of Harrow’s Heroes for the past eight years it has given us great pride to have been so closely associated with this event.

“It has recognised those in our community who share similar goals to Rotary and have brought their skills, experience and enthusiasm to help it thrive or who have helped and supported others in the community to do so.”

Nominations for the competition have now closed and judges will begin to review each person or team put forward for an award before the winners are announced on the night, with the Harrow Times reporting live from the event.
