THOUSANDS of cans and packets of food were donated as members of a Hindu temple took part in a day of kindness.

The congregation of Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury, in Kingsbury Road, took to the streets on Sunday, October 4 as part of Sewa Day – a day dedicated to performing acts of kindness to help others in the community.

Members of the Hindu temple stood outside the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Hendon, collecting more than 4,000 donations from passing shoppers

All food collected will now be donated to charity St Mungo's Broadway to help feed homeless people in the capital.

A spokesman said: “The efforts of the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury community were a huge success in not only collecting vital food supplies, but also in raising the profile of St Mungo's Broadway - a fantastic London charity that helps people recover from the issues that create homelessness.”

Thousands across the world came together on October 4 to perform Sewa - a Sanskrit word which means to sacrifice your time and resources for the benefit of others without wanting anything in return.
