The nurse who contributed to the death of a stroke patient by injecting drugs rather than administering them nasally will be allowed to continue practicing.
In 2011, nurse Chumitrah Vijendra had been caring for an 84-year-old man while she worked at the stroke unit at Northwick Park Hospital in Watford Road, Harrow.
The patient, who had a number of health conditions including high blood pressure, was awaiting a procedure to fit a feeding tube which bypasses the mouth and oesophagus.
After administering the man’s prescribed vitamins via a needle, Vijendra then gave the man medication to treat his high blood pressure – which should be crushed and fed through a nasogastric tube.
But instead the nurse used another syringe to administer the crushed pills into this blood.
The man became unresponsive and died at around 8.30am in February 2011.
A hearing at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) yesterday ruled that Vijendra, who admitted the mistake, will; be permitted to continue practising.
