A mother is hoping her turn on the catwalk will help breast cancer survivors it is possible to look and feel “fabulous” after being diagnosed.

Amanda Turofsky, of Hadley Close, Borehamwood, is one of 32 models taking part in this year’s Breast Cancer Care’s fashion show.

She is one of 32 models chosen to take part in this year’s fashion show at The Grosvenor House Hotel, on Wednesday, October 7.

Mother-of-three Mrs Turofsky said: “I’ve attended the show a number of times after a friend of mine had breast cancer, but was always sat in the audience.

“It’s always been an incredibly moving and inspiring event and following my own diagnosis in 2013, this year I am so excited about actually taking part.

“Being a model is not only a chance for me to get glamorous, I also hope it helps others see there is life after breast cancer and you can feel fabulous and feminine again.”

The 54-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2013 but after chemotherapy, a lumpectomy and radiotherapy, she was finally given the all clear last year.

Just one week after her lumpectomy, she took part in a fashion shoot where she wore a bikini top for Breast Cancer Care.

Speaking about how she was diagnosed, she said: “I lay down for a rest and was reading a book. As I turned a page, I brushed against my breast and felt something untoward.

“I immediately visited the doctor and was quickly diagnosed as having breast cancer. It was a huge shock and my cancer journey was not easy one.

“I was advised to have chemotherapy to reduce the lump to hopefully avoid the need for a total mastectomy.”

But during her first stage of treatment she contracted a serious infection and temporarily lost the use of her left arm.

Her long locks had to be cut as within a matter of days, they had fallen out as a result of the chemotherapy.

She added: “My friend who had been on a similar journey said to think of my treatment as an uphill climb, but when I reached the half way stage of treatment, at the top of the hill, I would then see the finishing line.

“The chemo did its job and shrunk my lump, so I only needed a small lumpectomy. This was followed by radiotherapy.

“Throughout my journey, I had the amazing support of the services that Breast Cancer Care offers, be it their support services or online chats with others that are going through the same.”
