VOLUNTEERS “worked like minions” when they helped clear up a field which became overgrown during the rainy summer months.

Members of the Woodcock Hill Village Green Society spent the weekend raking, shearing, strimming and cutting the field between Byron Avenue and Milton Drive.

They worked together as a team as they gave the field a spring clean for dog walkers and ramblers to enjoy.

Pat Strack, who is part of the society, said: “We were relieved after all the rain, the weather was kind to us.

“Over the summer everything grew quite rapidly what with all the rain, then the sun, and one of the paths had almost completely disappeared.

“Our first task was to clear the field and push the brambles and nettles back because that was preventing people from having access to it.”

Sue and Peter Williams, who helped on the day, donated a bush cutter.

The working party was led by Alex Melson, who took charge of taming the hedges.

Mrs Strack added: “We were Alex’s minions, working behind him with shears, rakes, cutters, clearing everything up and moving it all away.”

Volunteer David Schwartz used his garden strimmer with such force that it broke.

Around ten people turned up to help on the day.

The next working party will be held on October 4 and Mrs Strack is encouraging people to take part, where they will plant flower seeds.

It costs £5 a year to join the Woodcock Hill Village Green Society.
