Londoners have been promised to a cut in tube fares from one mayoral candidate.

Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas has called for a cut in all Tube, train and bus fares for all passengers.

Londoners commuting to zone 1 have reportedly seen an increase of more than 30 per cent in ticket prices under current London Mayor Boris Johnson, according to the Labour mayoral candidate.

As part of his pledges to Londoners, Mr Thomas has promised to cut tube, rail and bus fares by 10 per cent in the first year if he became Mayor and freeze them for the remaining three years.

He said: “London has the highest cost of living of any region or nation in the UK, and many in our city are finding it hard to make ends meet. That needs to change.

“That is why I would cut Tube, rail and bus fares by 10 per cent in the first year if I became mayor, and freeze them for the remaining three years – a real terms cut of almost 20 per cent by 2020.

“Labour needs to stand on the side of Londoners, making it a little easier for people on their way to work.

“With travel in London so expensive, a cut in fares will make a real financial difference.”

Mr Thomas claims that his planned fares cut would cost £2.63 billion over the four-year term, compared to if fares continued to rise at the rate of inflation.
