An Elstree Scout leader is organising the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan.

The event, which takes place over two weeks in July and August, brings together 30,000 participants from around the world.

It is driven by the 6,000-strong International Service Team (IST) of which Elstree leader Rachel Turek is a member.

Ms Turek is currently in Japan, facilitating the adventures and activities for international scouts, and encouraging participants to engage with global issues.

Before she left, Ms Turek said: "I was lucky enough to go to the last World Scout Jamboree in Sweden in 2011 as a participant and I’m so looking forward to going to this Jamboree as an adult volunteer.

"I will be part of the faith zone, which gives me a great chance to meet new people and make friends. I really enjoy working with young people, it is great fun."

This year’s Jamboree, in Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi City, Japan, is focused on nature and addresses environmental and sustainability topics.

Chief scout, Bear Grylls, said the World Scout Jamboree is a great example of adult scouting.

"While lots of people know that Scouting is all about adventure, they often don’t realise that adult volunteers get to do just as much as our young members through their involvement," he added.
