Tins and packets of food have been piled high as generous shoppers donated more than two tonnes of food for charity.

Tesco customers have donated a total of 7,627 meals during the sixth Neighbourhood Food Collection this summer, an increase of 13 per cent compared to last summer’s collection.

More than 2.4 tonnes of canned, dried and long-life food have been donated at the thirteen Tesco stores across Harrow as part of the Tesco Neighbourhood Food Collection.

The collection, which took place over three days last week, raised a total of 422,395 meals across London - enough to feed everyone seated at a full Wembley Stadium more than four times over.

Eni Martins, London community manager, said: “Our customers have really taken the collection to their hearts and it’s great to see so many generous donations to help support some of the more vulnerable people across London and particularly in Harrow itself.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support the Neighbourhood Food Collection has received in stores and we’re pleased to be able to help those in need this summer.”

All food collected will now be donated to foodbank charity The Trussell Trust and charity Fareshare.
