HomeStart and opposition councillors voiced their shock and concern at the “devastating” decision for the hundreds of families who use the home-visiting service.

They said families face a “frightening future” and the results of the county council’s decision to slash funding will be “disastrous”.

Rachel Allen, HomeStart coordinator, said: “It’s been disappointing to have the decision approved by county council not to provide funding for a home-visiting service. But having sat and listened to the opposing views, I feel even more passionate about this amazing charity I work for.

“Our volunteers provide such valuable, professional help to local families that I’ll be working with our incredible team at HomeStart to secure vital funding from elsewhere.”

Scheme manager Emma Power sought to reassure HomeStart volunteers and families, that for now, it is business as usual and the charity would look for support from businesses, colleges and schools.

Liberal Democrat spokesperson on children's services Nascot Park councillor Mark Watkin said the decision “will be devastating”.

He said: "700 supported families face a frightening future and could drop into the higher needs groups as a result of this. I am appalled at the complete lack of planning or consultation with HomeStart, children’s centres and health visitors. The results will be disastrous.

"I will continue to hold the administration to account for every family so abandoned"
