Bright colours and ornate chariots will flood the streets as a Hindu community celebrates the Rath Yatra festival this weekend.

Hundreds of people will take to the streets to pull ‘divine’ chariots on Sunday as the Hindu community celebrates Rath Yatra, a festival which involves transporting deities on a chariot.

A religious ceremony known as Poojan and Maha Aarti will begin at 11am on Sunday, July 19 at SKS Swaminarayan Temple in Westfield Lane, Kenton, followed by a procession back to Shree Swaminarayan Temple, Dharma Bhakti Manor.

Swathes of colours will fill Kenton Road as the procession, pulling three chariots dedicated to Lord Jagannathji, will make its way along Honeypot Lane towards Marsh Lane, Stanmore Hill and Wood Lane.

Offerings of flowers, fruits and nuts will be made throughout the parade, along with singing and dancing to the Maha Mantra – a Hare Krishna mantra.

Festival-goers will each be given the opportunity to pull the three chariots – or raths – by hand through the streets, with one for women, one for men and a final chariot for children.

Delays on the roads are likely as the procession makes its way to Wood Lane, Stanmore.

On arrival at the temple at 3.30pm, the community will come together for a celebration followed by Maha Prasad – the 56 foods which were offered to Lord Jagannathji.
