Fundraisers say they are very proud to be a part of an annual competition to celebrate the work of volunteers.

The Rotary Club of Edgware and Stanmore has been sponsoring the Harrow’s Heroes annual competition for eight years.

Margaret Matchett, a Rotary member, has occasionally appeared on the judging panel for the competition over the past few years.

She said: “With all our volunteering, we have a tremendous affinity with the hundreds of volunteers across the borough who commit their time and effort to help the community.

“Volunteering plays a big part in the community and it is nice to see positive stories about things people do, rather than the negative, and this can definitely help.

“There’s a number of people who perform a variety of selfless acts in Harrow, giving up their days, their evenings and their nights to help people who can’t help themselves, from homeless people to young people.

“The club is very proud to sponsor the competition and definitely hopes to continue sponsorship of Harrow’s Heroes for many years to come, and we hope to continue our fellowship with the volunteers all over Harrow.”

The club, whose motto is 'service above self', was established in 1930 and aims to provide a helping hand to those in need in the community – both in the borough and abroad.

Mrs Matchett said: “People often ask ‘what is it that Rotary do?’ and we just want to make that clear.

“We have been involved in fundraising in the Philippines and we also have a member who runs a camp for people in India.

“We have Monday clubs for disabled people, where we play cards and have a chat – it’s all about fellowship, which is what’s important.”
