A volunteer for a charity for visually impaired people says the team is very proud to be nominated for the Harrow’s Heroes award.

The Harrow Talking Newspaper is currently celebrating its 40th year of providing a vital service to the sight impaired people of the Borough.

Every week, the dedicated team of volunteers records an hour-long news programme drawn from the pages of the Harrow newspapers.

The recordings are issued out by memory stick, which are sent in the post to readers.

After so many years of service to the community, the charity has now been nominated for the Volunteer Team Award as part of this year’s Harrow’s Heroes competition that recognises the unsung work of volunteers across the borough.

Barbara Turner, who volunteers for the charity, said: “It’s a team effort – several of our team come from amateur dramatics or were teachers so I think they like the reading.

“The admin are the people I’ve always rather admired – it’s not that much glamour but they’re the ones who make sure everything is place to send out the memory sticks each week.

“Personallly I don’t like the term heroes- we’re a group of people who do something we quite enjoy doing, we don’t put ourselves in any danger.

“We would be very proud to win the award, and it would feel very nice to be appreciated by the community for the work we do but it’s not about that - we know our listeners appreciate it because they keep listening each week.”

The charity also produces a bi-monthly magazine using its own resources, along with providing a sound recording of the council's own magazine 'Harrow People'.
