Characters from Oz and Kipling's Indian jungle will walk the streets when Borehamwood’s annual carnival parades through the town.

People have spent weeks designing their floats for the event, which kicks off the start of Festival Fortnight.

This year, the Elstree and Borehamwood Residents’ Association will march through the town dressed as the characters of Wicked.

New youth club Funky Friendz have chosen Disney’s The Jungle Book as their theme and the children taking part have designed their truck themselves.

It will be led by the City of London Brass marching band and will leave Brook Road car park at 1.45pm.

The procession will travel through to Shenley Road and will be complete by 3.30pm.

Over the next two weeks, events will be held as part of the 59th annual Civic Festival, organised by Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council.

Mayor Councillor Richard Butler said: “It’s something that’s been going on for many years and we’re grateful for the public’s support.

“It gives them the chance to find out more about what’s happening in the community they live in.”

Events include film screenings, dance shows, sporting events for children, flower shows and coffee mornings.

A classic car show will be held on Saturday, June 20 at the Maxwell Park Centre, followed by a screening of Roger Rabbit and the Italian Job.

The South African Cultural Choir will perform at The Ark, in Thrift Farm Lane, at 7.30pm on June 19 while children can play with mini animals at Borehamwood Library on June 17 at 2.30pm.

Children’s artwork will also be on display as part of the Schools Art Show at St Teresa’s Parish Centre on Friday, June 19 from 9am to 5.30pm, Saturday from 9 to 5pm and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.

Cllr Butler added: “It’s the beginning of a new mayoral year for me and a new year for many of our new councillors so I’m very excited.

“We want to hear from people about how we can make it bigger and better next year, too.”
