A bus company has vowed to “salvage” services after they were axed by Hertfordshire County Council.

The Conservative-led authority cut 1.47million from the bus budget and will withdraw funding from services that run after 7.30pm.

In Borehamwood, the 306 to Watford will no longer run on Sundays, and there will be a reduced service throughout the rest of the week.

But Sullivan Buses wants to run services later than 7.30pm and on Sundays by funding it themselves, and will make an announcement in the coming weeks.

Commercial manager Steve Simmons said: “The cutbacks will clearly impact hard on anyone who doesn’t have access to a car.

“We have a number of passengers who told us they will have to give up their jobs as a result of the withdrawal of the Sunday and evening services.

“As a result, we are now looking at what we will be able to salvage from the journeys that are no longer being funded.”

The 398 – which runs between Potters Bar and Borehamwood Tesco – is being extended via Theobold Street, Gateshead Road, Leeming Road, Aycliffe road, to Radlett and Watford.

That means including the 306, there will be up to four buses an hour between Borehamwood and Watford.

On Saturdays, the 398 will operate between Potters Bar and Elstree and Borehamwood Station as of Saturday, May 30.

The company is also reviewing the location of bus stops. In Borehamwood, new stops will be created in Studio Way, Aycliffe Road, Denham Way, Tennison Avenue and Melrose Avenue.

Earlier this week, campaigners told the Borehamwood Times that it was a “very dark day” for Hertfordshire after the bus routes were cut.

Mr Simmons added: “Meanwhile we will continue to discuss with Hertfordshire officials whether some funding might be possible in order to reduce the hardship that these cutbacks by Hertfordshire will cause.

“The threat and now the reality of the Hertfordshire bus cuts have actually reduced and delayed our investment in our bus services. But we are still very determined to see them prosper.”
