Stanmore's Hindu community raised more than £100,000 for the Nepal earthquake appeal.

The Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Stanmore, the MZ & KZ Shah Foundation, Shishukunj, the Lions Club of Nepal and Hunnarshala hosted a prayer night on May 9 to raise money after the two earthquakes in Nepal, which have now killed more than 8,000 people.

People said prayers for those affected by the disaster, with the Shiv Shakti Bhajan Mandal band, who gave their time for free, playing tablas and percussion instruments and sang devotional bhajans – a type of Hindu hymn.

More than £62,000 was raised from the prayer night at Zaverchand Memorial Hall in Kingsbury, in addition to the £45,000 that the temple raised at a previous event.

The money collected will be used in rebuilding the lives of communities in rural mountain villages affected by the earthquake.
