Labour leader Ann Harrison has lost her seat in what was previously the Labour heartland of Cowley Hill.

Ms Harrison was visibly upset as she blamed her loss on the fact that people had to cast their vote for three candidates for the first time ever in Hertsmere.

There were just 23 votes between Ms Harrison and the area’s first ever Conservative councillor, David Burcombe.

She said: “A lot of people didn’t realise they had to vote three times. That was undemocratic. It left a lot of people confused.

“I am obviously gutted that I lost. I didn’t expect that result this morning at all. I will miss standing on the Film Studios Board the most.

“I’d also like to remind people that Labour bought the film studios when they were in powered.

“I’m also a governor at Hertswood Academy so I’ll continue doing that – but first I am going on a cruise next week.”

Ms Harrison has led the opposition party in Borehamwood for the last 12 years.

Her role could now be taken over by Richard Butler, who was elected to Cowley Hill with 1,874 votes. Last night, he missed out on being Hertsmere’s next MP to Conservative Oliver Dowden.

Cllr Butler said: “I am grateful to be back but I am really sorry to have lost Ann. It’s a real shame. She has been a fantastic leader for 12 years.

“I am confident we can regain that seat back.”

Labour's Michelle Vince retained her seat in Cowley Hill.

So far, Labour have made no gains and have also lost one seat in Kenilworth to the Conservatives.

Speaking about his win, Cllr David Burcombe said: “I am elated, I knew I’d win though. They told me I would win. I do a lot in the community. We did a lot of canvassing, people like me – they call me Mr Tried and Trusted.”
