Voters have been arriving at polling stations in droves, according to officials.

With polling stations across Hertsmere now open until 10pm this evening, voters across the borough have flocked to the ballot boxes to have their say on the future of the country.

At the Borehamwood Baptist Church, in Farriers Way, Borehamwood, polling officials say the turnout – which is normally about 1,000 - has been “much better than normal”.

Officers said: “Most people tend to come in to vote in the evenings, but it has been a constant stream of people all morning.

“It has been very busy.”

In Hertsmere, elections are being held for both the General Election and Hertsmere Borough Council.

In Allum Hall, off Allum Lane, Elstree, polling officials said they too had seen an increased turnout.

They said: “We’ve definitely been very busy this morning, lots of people have been coming in already.

“The turnout certainly feels higher than last year, although of course we only had the local elections then.”

Counting of votes in Hertsmere will begin soon after the polling stations close, and results will be declared overnight.
