Mothers behind a new youth club say they had a “fantastic” response from people pledging to help.

Funky Friendz set up a stall at an event to showcase events during Borehamwood's annual Festival Fortnight in June at Shenley Road, Borehamwood, on Saturday.

The Borehamwood Times launched its Funky Friendz Appeal two weeks ago in the hopes of helping raise £4,000 to launch a club for children aged seven to 12.

The club is the brainchild of grandmother Kelly Kent and mother Michelle Jonas, who gave up their weekend to raise awareness about their cause at the event on Saturday.

Ms Kent said: “People were really coming over and talking to us about it – it really got the word out there.

“We got some more volunteers too and it’s exciting because with every step, it feels like we’re closer to opening the club in September.

“So many people who spoke to us said they recognised our appeal in the paper so we’re pleased to have backing from the Borehamwood Times.”

During the event, councillors pledged to donate up to £1,000 to the club.

People can also win a one night stay with breakfast at the five star Hendon Hall Hotel by donating £1 via our appeal page and e-mailing your contact details to aslater@london.newsquest.co.uk

The money raised so far will go towards paying for DBS checks to ensure no volunteers have a criminal record.
