A 23-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital after a serious crash on the A1.

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway, just north of Borehamwood, when a white Fiat 500 car collided with a silver Ford Transit van.

The driver of the Fiat suffered serious injuries and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital by air ambulance. The van driver was not injured.

Simon Rowley, who runs FireAid International, which sends fire engines to other countries, saw the aftermath of the crash.

He said: “We saw the helicopter landing and I was surprised, because it was hellish windy.

“The van had gone past where the fire engine was and it then clobbered the Fiat up pretty hard.

“There was a hell of a thump to the front of the van, it was very crumpled, so I was surprised to hear the driver got out okay.”

Police are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call PC Andy Ralph or Sergeant Richard Barker on 101.
